Surah Al Asr in English

Surah Al-Asr (The Declining Day) is the 103rd chapter of the Qur'an, consisting of 3 verses. It is a short but profound Surah that highlights the importance of time and the essential qualities for success in this life and the Hereafter. The Surah emphasizes the value of faith, righteous deeds, patience, and the importance of spreading truth.

Here is the English translation of Surah Al-Asr, along with a brief explanation for each verse:

1.

By time,

Explanation:
The Surah begins with an oath by time, which is a valuable and irreplaceable resource. The use of the word "time" (al-Asr) signifies the importance of time in human life and the passing nature of each moment. Allah swears by time to draw attention to its significance in human existence and the urgency of using it wisely.

2.

Indeed, mankind is in loss,

Explanation:
This verse points to the reality that most people are in a state of loss. Despite the blessings of time, many individuals squander it by living lives of neglect and forgetfulness of their true purpose, which is to worship Allah and follow His guidance. People often waste time on distractions and worldly pursuits that do not benefit them in the Hereafter.

3.

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

Explanation:
This verse provides the exception to the general state of loss. Those who will not be in loss are:

  1. Those who have believed—People who have true faith in Allah and His message.
  2. And done righteous deeds—People who act in accordance with their faith, performing good deeds and following Allah's guidance.
  3. And advised each other to truth—People who remind each other of the truth, urging one another to follow the path of righteousness and to uphold the values of justice, kindness, and sincerity.
  4. And advised each other to patience—People who encourage one another to be patient, persevering in the face of difficulties and remaining steadfast in their faith.

These four qualities are essential for success. They are the antidote to the general loss described in the earlier part of the Surah. The combination of faith, good deeds, and mutual support for truth and patience ensures that one will not be among the losers but will achieve success in this life and the Hereafter.

Summary of Surah Al-Asr:

Surah Al-Asr highlights the critical importance of time and how it is wasted by most people, who are caught in the distractions of this world. It warns that the general state of humanity is one of loss, but offers an exception for those who:

  • Have faith in Allah,
  • Do righteous deeds,
  • Encourage each other to follow the truth, and
  • Help each other to be patient.

This Surah serves as a reminder of the preciousness of time and the importance of living a life guided by faith, good deeds, mutual encouragement, and perseverance. It emphasizes the need to focus on what truly matters—our relationship with Allah and our actions in accordance with His guidance—before time runs out.
