Surah An Nahl in English Translation with Explain
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1.
أَتَىٰ أَمْرُ اللَّـهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
Atā amru Allāhi falā tasta'jilūhu subḥānahu wata'ālā 'ammā yushrikūn
Translation: The command of Allah has come, so do not hasten it. Glory is to Him, and He is exalted above what they associate with Him.
Explanation: This verse serves as a reminder that the decree of Allah cannot be hastened by human will. He is above and beyond what is ascribed to Him by those who associate partners with Him. It emphasizes the sovereignty and timing of Allah’s decisions.
2.
يُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ بِٱلرُّوحِ مِنۢهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦۤ أَنْ أَنْذِرُوا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۟ فَٱتَّقُونِ
Yunazzilu al-malā'ikata bir-ruḥi minhu ʿalā man yashā'u min ʿibādihī an 'andhirū anahū lā ilāha illā anā fataqqūn
Translation: He sends down the angels with the Spirit by His command upon whom He wills among His servants, [saying], “Warn that there is no deity except Me, so fear Me.”
Explanation: This verse refers to the way Allah sends His guidance through angels, particularly through the revelation of His message, commanding His chosen servants to fear Him alone and to worship Him without associating any partners with Him.
3.
خَلَقَ السَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ تَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
Khalaqa as-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqqi ta'ālā ʿammā yushrikūn
Translation: He created the heavens and the earth in truth. Exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
Explanation: This verse highlights the majesty of Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, affirming that He created the universe with purpose and wisdom. Allah is above any false beliefs and associations of partners with Him.
4.
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍۢ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌۢ مُّبِينٌ
Khalaqa al-insāna min nuṭfatin fa-idhā huwa khaṣīmum mubeen
Translation: He created man from a sperm drop, and suddenly he is a clear adversary.
Explanation: Allah reminds humanity of their humble origin, created from a small drop of sperm, yet many people dispute and oppose the truth despite their beginnings being so insignificant.
5.
وَٱلۡأَنفَـٰسِ وَٱلْحَـٰمِرَتِ وَٱلْعَارِبِينَ
Wa al-anfāsi wa al-ḥāmīrati wa al-ʿāribīna
Translation: And the livestock, and the animals that the people ride.
Explanation: Allah draws attention to the creation of the livestock and the animals which humans use for transport and other needs. They are signs of His power and mercy.
6.
وَٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ تُسَخِّرُونَ
Wa al-malā'ikatu tusakhrūn
Translation: And the angels who are the forces of the heavens.
Explanation: This verse reminds that Allah has control over all His creation, including the angels who carry out His commands and help execute His will in the universe.
7.
وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلۡقُرْءَانَ
Wa 'idhā sami'ū al-Qur'ān
Translation: When they hear the Qur’an.
Explanation: The disbelievers often hear the Qur'an but reject it without reflection, failing to understand its divine message.
8.
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْنَزِّلُ هَـٰٓذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ
Wa qālū lawu nazzilu hādhā al-Qur'ānu 'alā rajulin min al-qaryatayni ʿaẓīm
Translation: And they say, "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a man from one of the two cities?"
Explanation: The disbelievers mockingly question why the Qur'an was not revealed to someone of greater stature or a more prominent leader, like those of the two major cities. This reflects their arrogance and lack of understanding.
9.
أَحْلَـٰهُمْ أَحْلَـٰكِ
Ahlāhum ahlākī
Translation: Allah’s blessings would have come to them.
Explanation: Allah warns them of His power to provide blessings and support even to those who might be seen as less important in their eyes.
10.
وَمَا أَحْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا أَنشَأْنَآهَا بِسُوءٍ وَيَأْمُرُ اللَّهُ
Wa mā ahlaknā min qaryah illa anshā'nāhā bīsu'i wa yamur allāh
Translation: We did not destroy a village but We sent a messenger with it.
Explanation: Every people that were destroyed had been warned by a Prophet. Allah’s justice is upheld by the fact that He sends a messenger to every nation before their punishment.
Themes and Explanation of Surah An-Nahl:
1. The Glory of Allah and His Sovereignty:
The Surah emphasizes Allah’s complete control over the universe. He is the Creator of the heavens, the earth, and all living beings. Everything is subject to His command and is created with purpose. It also criticizes the idolatry of those who associate partners with Him.
2. The Revelation of the Qur'an:
Allah sent down the Qur'an as a clear guidance for mankind. The disbelievers challenge its revelation, but the Surah affirms the Qur'an as the ultimate truth, accessible for guidance for all of humanity.
3. The Fickleness of Man:
Humans are reminded of their humble beginnings, created from a small drop, yet they often become arrogant and dispute Allah's commands. Despite their creation being a clear sign of Allah's power, they forget their origins and defy the truth.
4. The Message of the Prophets:
The Surah highlights that Allah sends His message to every nation through His Prophets. The people who reject the message ultimately face consequences, but the message remains clear and easy to follow for those who accept.
5. The Blessings of Allah:
The Surah highlights many of Allah’s blessings on His creation, including the earth, the animals, the crops, and even the guidance through His Prophets. Believers are reminded to show gratitude for these blessings and not to forget the One who provides for them.
6. Warnings to the Disbelievers:
The disbelievers are warned that their rejection of the truth will lead to their downfall, as history has shown that every nation that rejected Allah’s message faced destruction. Despite their mockery of the Qur'an, they will eventually realize the truth.
Final Message:
Surah An-Nahl is a powerful reminder of Allah’s sovereignty over creation, His blessings, and the responsibility of humankind to submit to Him alone. The Surah calls for gratitude, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the Qur’an as the final and clear guidance. It warns the disbelievers of the consequences of their rejection of truth and idolatry, while offering hope and a call for repentance to those who choose to follow the path of Allah.
