Surah Nuh (Noah) is the 71st chapter of the Qur'an, consisting of 28 verses. It was revealed in Makkah and discusses the story of Prophet Noah (Nuh) and the response of his people to his call to worship Allah alone. 1.

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."

Allah sent Prophet Noah to warn his people of the impending punishment if they did not repent and turn to Allah. Noah’s message was one of repentance and worship of the One true God.


2.

He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner."

Explanation:
Noah clearly declared to his people that he was a direct and unambiguous messenger from Allah, sent to guide them and warn them of the consequences of their disbelief.


3.

Saying, 'Worship Allah, fear Him, and obey me.'

Explanation:
Noah calls his people to worship Allah alone, fear His displeasure, and obey the message he was sent with. This is the essence of his call to them: submission to the will of Allah.


4.

He will forgive you of your sins and delay you for an appointed term. Indeed, the appointment of Allah, when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you only knew."

Explanation:
Noah offers his people forgiveness from their sins if they repent and turn to Allah. He warns them, however, that the appointed term (the end of their opportunity for repentance) will come at its fixed time and cannot be delayed.

He said, "My Lord, indeed I have invited my people night and day,

Noah mentions to Allah how tirelessly he called his people to the truth, both day and night, demonstrating his persistence in spreading the message.


6.

But my invitation increased them not except in flight.

Explanation:
Despite Noah’s persistent efforts, his people only became more distant and rebellious, refusing to listen to his message and even fleeing from it in increasing numbers.


7.

And indeed, every time I invited them that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears and covered themselves with their garments and persisted and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.

Explanation:
Whenever Noah invited his people to forgiveness and repentance, they refused, blocking their ears and covering themselves from the message. Their arrogance and pride led them to reject the truth.


8.

Then I invited them publicly,

Explanation:
Noah resorted to calling his people publicly, trying to reach a wider audience, but they continued to reject his message.


9.

And I have spoken to them in private,

Explanation:
He also made private appeals to individuals in his community, but they remained steadfast in their denial and rejection.


10.

And I said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.'

Noah urged his people to ask Allah for forgiveness, promising them that Allah is most merciful and forgiving, ready to pardon those who repent.


11.

He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

Explanation:
Noah reassured them that if they repented, Allah would send abundant rain to nourish the land and bless them with prosperity.


12.

And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.

Explanation:
In addition to rain, Noah promises that Allah will bless them with wealth, children, gardens, and rivers if they repent and turn to Him.


13.

What is [the matter] with you that you do not understand?

Explanation:
Noah asks his people why they refuse to understand and accept the truth despite the clear benefits of repentance and obedience to Allah.


14.

Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."

Explanation:
Noah warns them that if they continue in their disbelief, they will face the painful punishment of the Day of Judgment.


15.

They said, "Never will we leave our gods because of what you have said, and we will not believe you."

Explanation:
The people of Noah arrogantly rejected his message, declaring that they would not abandon their idols and would not believe in his message.


16.

And we will say, 'It is nothing but a man who has invented it, and we will not believe him.'"

The disbelievers accused Noah of inventing lies and claimed that they would not believe him, continuing to dismiss his message as false.


17.

Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children increase him in nothing but loss.

Noah expresses his frustration with his people’s rejection, noting that they followed the wealthy and powerful individuals who were leading them astray.


18.

And they conspired an immense plan."

Explanation:
The disbelievers began to devise a great plot to oppose Noah and his message, trying to eliminate his influence.


19.

And they said, "Do not leave your gods and do not leave Wadd or Suwa', or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr."

Explanation:
The disbelievers named their idols and insisted on continuing to worship them, showing their strong attachment to false beliefs.


20.

And indeed, they have already led many astray.

Explanation:
Noah points out that these idols had already led many people astray, encouraging them to persist in their misguided ways.


21.

And do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."

Noah prays that the idols and the idolaters will only increase in error, as their obstinate refusal to repent and believe will lead them further away from the truth.


22.

Because of their sins they were drowned, and they were made to enter the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah any helpers.

Due to their persistent sin, the disbelievers were drowned in the flood, and those who survived were punished by entering the Fire. No one could save them from Allah's wrath.


23.

And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers anyone who will be a dweller in the Fire."

Noah makes a supplication, asking Allah not to leave any of the disbelievers alive, as they will only lead others astray and deserve punishment.


24.

Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and will not beget except every wicked, ungrateful one.

25.

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women and do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction."

Noah prays for himself, his family, and all the believers, asking Allah for forgiveness and mercy, while also asking for the destruction of the disbelievers.


26.

And it was said, "O Noah, come down from the ship in peace from Us and blessings upon you and upon the people who are with you.

After the flood, Allah commands Noah to disembark from the ark in peace and grants blessings to him and the believers who were with him.


27.

But [there will be] a people to whom We will grant enjoyment, and then they will [eventually] touch them from Us a painful punishment.

Allah informs Noah that some of the people who survived the flood will live a life of enjoyment for a while, but they will eventually face the punishment of Allah for their wrongdoing.


28..

That is the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. Neither you nor your people knew it before this. So be patient. Indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous."
