Surah Al-Hijr – Arabic, Translation, and Explanation
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1.
الٓرۡ
Alif Lam Ra.
- Translation: These are the letters of the Arabic alphabet that appear at the beginning of some Surahs, and their exact meaning is known only to Allah. They signify the divine origin of the Qur'an.
2.
تِلْكَ آيَٰتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ
Tilka āyātu al-kitābi wa qur'ānin mubīn
Translation: These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an.
Explanation: This verse indicates that the Qur'an contains clear, unmistakable signs of guidance for mankind, which can lead them from darkness to light.
3.
رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ
Rubbamā yawaddu alladhīna kafarū law kānū muslimīn
Translation: Perhaps those who disbelieve would wish that they had been Muslims.
Explanation: This verse reflects the regret of disbelievers, especially on the Day of Judgment, when they will wish they had accepted Islam but will be too late to change.
4.
ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Dhārhum ya'kulū wa yatamatta'ū wa yulhīhim al-amalu fasawfa ya'lamūn
Translation: Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by hope. But they will come to know.
Explanation: Allah advises the Prophet ﷺ to let the disbelievers live their lives, indulging in worldly pleasures, as they will eventually face the consequences of their actions.
5.
وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
Wa mā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā kitābun ma'loom
Translation: And We did not destroy any city but that it had a known decree.
Explanation: Allah reminds the disbelievers that every nation or people that were destroyed had been given a prescribed time and warning. Their end was always part of Allah’s plan.
6.
مَا سَبَقَنَا۟ مِنْهَا۟ۖ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُهْلِكِينَ
Mā sabaqanā minhā wamā naḥnu bimuhlikīn
Translation: No nation can delay its time, and Allah is never hastened in His decree.
Explanation: Allah’s decree is perfect and timely. No nation or individual can avoid or delay the appointed time of their fate or destruction.
7.
وَقَالُوا۟ يَآ أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ
Wa qālū yā ayyuha alladhī nuzzila 'alayhī adh-dhikru innaka lamajnoon
Translation: And they say, "O you upon whom the reminder has been sent down, indeed you are mad."
Explanation: The disbelievers accuse Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of being insane because he was preaching a message that was difficult for them to accept.
8.
لَّوْمَآتِيَنَٰهُ بِمُعَجِّلٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Law mātīannāhu bimu'ajjilin in kuntā mina as-sādiqīn
Translation: If you should not be mad, then bring us a punishment, if you should be among the truthful.
Explanation: The disbelievers mockingly challenge Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to bring them punishment if he truly speaks the truth.
9.
مَا نُحْلِكُهُمْ إِلَّا بِمَا جَاءُوا۟ بِهِۦۚ وَمَآ أَتَىٰهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ رُسُلٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
Mā nuhlikuhum illā bimā jā'ū bihī wamā atāhum min rabbihim min rusulin illā kānū bihī yastahzi'ūn
Translation: We do not destroy them except for what they have earned. And no messenger came to them except that they ridiculed him.
Explanation: This verse indicates that nations are destroyed only after they have reached the peak of their rejection, mockery, and disobedience towards Allah’s messengers.
10.
وَمَآ أَتَوْا۟ بِهِۦۚ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
Wa mā ataw bihī wamā kānū bihī yastahzi'ūn
Translation: The messengers of Allah were mocked by those who denied them. They persisted in their rejection until the punishment came.
Explanation: Despite the continuous warning from the Prophets, the people ridiculed the message until they met their eventual destruction.
11.
وَمَآ نَحْنُ بِمُهْلِكِينَ الْقُرُونَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ نُوحٍۢ
Wa mā naḥnu bimuhlikīn al-qurūna min ba'di Nūḥin
Translation: We are not going to destroy the generations after Noah.
Explanation: Allah mentions that, despite the destruction of previous nations, He would not hasten to destroy those after Prophet Nuh (Noah) without a valid cause.
12.
وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُۥ رَٰهِبِينَ فِي هَٰذَا
Wa jaʿalnā lahu rāhibīn fī hādhā
Translation: And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember.
Explanation: Allah reassures the Prophet ﷺ that He has made the Qur'an simple for remembrance, understanding, and guidance, even though the disbelievers refuse to accept it.
Themes and Explanation of Surah Al-Hijr:
1. Rejection and Mockery of the Messengers:
Surah Al-Hijr focuses on the rejection and mockery faced by the Prophets, particularly Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, from their people. Despite the clear signs and warnings given by Allah through His messengers, people continue to ridicule and ignore the message, leading to their eventual destruction.
2. The Power of Allah's Decree:
The Surah reminds the readers of the inevitable fate that befalls those who reject Allah’s message. Allah’s decree is final, and no one can delay or change it. Destruction and guidance come at the appointed time, according to Allah’s wisdom.
3. The Qur'an as a Clear Reminder:
The Surah also speaks about the Qur'an being a clear and easy message. Those who are sincere will find it easy to understand and follow, but those who are arrogant or insincere will remain blind to its truths.
4. Punishment of Previous Nations:
The Surah brings examples of past nations that faced the wrath of Allah for their disobedience. The people of Prophet Nuh (Noah), 'Ad, Thamud, and others were destroyed after they persisted in rejecting the message and mocking the Prophets.
5. Hope for the Believers:
Although the disbelievers mock the message, Allah reassures the believers that they will be victorious in the end, and their patience will be rewarded.

Surah Al-Hijr serves as a reminder of the consequences of disbelief and arrogance towards Allah's message.
