Surah Al Muminun in English Translation with Explain
Surah Al-Mu’minun (The Believers), which is the 23rd chapter of the Qur'an. This Surah has 118 verses and was revealed in Makkah. It primarily focuses on the characteristics of true believers, their qualities, and the rewards they will receive in the Hereafter, while also addressing the fate of disbelievers.
Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
Qad aflaha-l-mu’minūn
Translation: Indeed, the believers have succeeded.
Explanation: This verse begins by affirming that the true believers (those who follow the path of Allah) are the ones who will ultimately succeed. Their success is in both this life and the Hereafter.
2.
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
Al-ladhīna hum fī ṣalātihim khāshiʿūn
Translation: Those who are humble in their prayer.
Explanation: True believers perform their prayers with sincerity and humility, focusing on their connection with Allah, not merely as a routine, but with full attention and devotion.
3.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ
Wal-ladhīna hum ‘ani-laghwi mu’riḍūn
Translation: And who turn away from ill speech.
Explanation: Believers avoid engaging in useless talk or harmful gossip. They are mindful of their words and avoid what is frivolous or sinful.
4.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ
Wal-ladhīna hum li-z-zakāti fā‘ilūn
Translation: And who are observant of zakah.
Explanation: True believers are those who regularly give zakah (alms) to purify their wealth and support the less fortunate. This is a fundamental practice in Islam that shows care for the community and fulfillment of an obligatory act.
5.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَٰفِظُونَ
Wal-ladhīna hum li-furūjihim ḥāfiẓūn
Translation: And who guard their private parts.
Explanation: Believers maintain modesty and chastity. They protect their sexual integrity and avoid any sinful or inappropriate behavior related to intimacy.
6.
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
Illā ‘alā azwājihim aw mā malakat ay-mānuhum fa innahum ghayru malūmīn
Translation: Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed.
Explanation: This refers to lawful intimacy, which is allowed only with one’s spouse or those whom one’s right hand possesses (slaves or captives, although this practice has been abolished in Islam). As long as sexual relations are within these bounds, there is no blame.
7.
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
Famani ibtaghā warā’a dhālika fa ulā'ika humu-l-‘ādūn
Translation: And those who seek beyond that are the transgressors.
Explanation: Any desire or action outside of lawful marriage or permissible relationships is considered sinful, and those who indulge in such acts are transgressors.
8.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمْ وَعَهۡدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ
Wal-ladhīna hum li-amānātihim wa ‘ahdihim rā‘ūn
Translation: And those who are faithful to their trusts and their promises.
Explanation: True believers are trustworthy. They honor the commitments and promises they make, whether they are personal, professional, or social.
9.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَوٰتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
Wal-ladhīna hum ‘alā ṣalawātihim yuḥāfiẓūn
Translation: And those who carefully maintain their prayer.
Explanation: Believers not only pray, but they maintain their prayers with punctuality, consistency, and devotion. Prayer is central to their lives, and they do not neglect it.
10.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
Ulā'ika fī jannātin mukramūn
Translation: Those are the inheritors.
Explanation: These believers are promised a great reward: they will inherit Paradise, where they will be honored and rewarded by Allah for their faith and good deeds.
11.
ٱلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ فِى جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٍۢ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ وَفِى جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٍۢ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا
Al-ladhīna yarithūna fī jannāt-i ‘adnī khālidīn fīhā
Translation: Who will inherit the Paradise of Eternity, where they will abide forever.
Explanation: Believers will be rewarded with Eternal Paradise (Jannat Adn), where they will live forever in peace and joy, as they have earned this reward through their faith and good deeds.
12.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَٰلٍۢ مِّنۢ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسۡنُونٍۢ
Wa laqad khalaqnā al-insāna min ṣalṣālīn min ḥamā’in masnūn
Translation: And We have certainly created man from clay that gives off a sound.
Explanation: This refers to the creation of human beings. Allah created humanity from clay or dust, shaped into a form that is unique and capable of hearing and understanding.
13-16. The Story of Prophet Noah
These verses tell the story of Prophet Noah (Nuh) and his mission. He was sent to his people to warn them about their disobedience and call them to repentance. Despite his long effort, only a few believed, and those who rejected his message were drowned in the flood. These stories are reminders to the believers that Allah rewards the faithful and punishes the disobedient.
17-20. The Story of Prophet Ibrahim
Next, the Surah recounts the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his unwavering faith in Allah, and his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) in obedience to Allah’s command. Allah intervened and provided a ram as a substitute for the sacrifice, symbolizing the importance of submission to Allah’s will.
21-30. The Story of Prophet Musa (Moses)
The story of Prophet Musa (Moses) is discussed, particularly his struggle against Pharaoh and his people’s oppression. His unwavering faith and his miracles, such as the splitting of the sea, are mentioned. The verse emphasizes that Allah will always support the believers.
31-40. The Stories of Other Prophets
The Surah mentions Prophet Dawood (David), Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon), Prophet Ayub (Job), Prophet Yunus (Jonah), and others. Their stories emphasize the virtues of patience, reliance on Allah, and the eventual success of those who are sincere and righteous.
41-60. Warnings and Messages to Disbelievers
This section warns the disbelievers who deny the messengers and their messages. The fate of those who reject Allah’s guidance is clear: they will face punishment on the Day of Judgment.
61-70. Final Reminders and Encouragement to the Believers
The Surah concludes with reminders to the believers to remain steadfast in their faith and trust in Allah’s promises. It also encourages them to be patient and persevere in the face of trials.

Surah Al-Mu’minun outlines the qualities and characteristics that make a person a true believer.
