Surah At-Tawbah (سورة التوبة) is the 9th chapter of the Qur'an, consisting of 129 verses. 1. A Declaration of Disavowal (9:1-2)

بَرَاءَةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّمْ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
"A declaration of disavowal from Allah and His Messenger to those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists." (9:1)

• Bara'ah means disavowal or a complete severing of ties. This verse addresses the polytheists (mushrikun) who violated their treaties with the Muslims. Allah declares His disassociation from them, indicating that they have broken the agreements, and Muslims are no longer bound to uphold these treaties.

فَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِٓ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍۢ ۖ وَٱعْلَمُوا۟ٓ أَنَّكُمْ لَا تَحْنُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ
"So travel freely in the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers." (9:2)

• Allah offers the polytheists a grace period of four months to travel freely in the land. After this, their time will be up, and they will face Allah's punishment. This shows Allah’s patience even with those who reject His commands.

2. The Consequences of Breaking Treaties (9:3-6)

وَأَذَانٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىءٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۖ
"And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the polytheists and so is His Messenger." (9:3)

• The verse declares that on the Day of Hajj, a public announcement was made to proclaim the disavowal of Allah and His Messenger from the polytheists. This was to ensure that there was no ambiguity about the Muslims' position and the relationship with those who rejected the faith.

3. The Hypocrites: Their Deeds and the Consequences (9:7-16)

وَمَا لِٱلْمُحْنِكِينَ فِى ٱلْمَسَٰجِدِ لِلَّهِ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَعْمَلُوا۟ بِالْبِرِّ وَٱلْرَّحْمَةِ
"What do you have to do with the hypocrites, who do not sincerely engage in worship and merely seek the company of the believers?" (9:7)

• Hypocrites (munafiqun) are those who outwardly profess faith but their hearts remain disbelieving. The Surah criticizes them for their lack of sincerity and their false pretensions of being part of the Muslim community.

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِيَرْضُوا۟ۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّٓ أَنْ يَرْضُوا۟ۖ
"They swear to you to please you, but Allah and His Messenger are more worthy for them to please." (9:12)

• Allah condemns the hypocrites for their actions of swearing oaths to please the Prophet (PBUH) while their hearts are distant from the truth. True submission is to please Allah and His Messenger, not to seek approval from people.

4. The Call to Repentance (9:18-21)

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا فُصِّلَتْ لَهُمْ ءَايَٰتُهُۥ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَٰنًۭا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
"The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely." (9:18)

• The true believers are those whose hearts become humbled and filled with fear when Allah's name is mentioned. Their faith grows stronger when they hear His words, and they place complete trust in Him.

وَأَذَانٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىءٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۖ
"And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the polytheists and so is His Messenger." (9:3)

5. The Quranic Approach to War (9:17-19)

مَا لِٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَنْ يَعْمَرُوا۟ مَسَٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِۦمْ بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ
"The polytheists are not fit to maintain the houses of Allah, witnessing against themselves with disbelief." (9:17)

• Allah mentions that those who reject faith and act against it, including polytheists, have no right to take care of the Mosques of Allah. Their actions contradict the very essence of what the house of Allah stands for.

6. The Importance of Sincerity and Repentance (9:104)

وَلَا تَحْسَبُوا۟ۤ ٱلَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا فَعَلُوا۟ وَيُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُحْمَدُوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا۟ ۚ فَلَا تَحْسَبُوا۟ۤهُمْ بِمُفْلِحِينَ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
"And do not think those who rejoice for what they have done and love to be praised for what they did not do, are in the clear." (9:104)

• This verse warns against the hypocrisy of those who want to appear righteous but are not. Sincerity in worship and deeds is essential. Those who show off their actions or claim rewards for deeds they did not perform are warned that they will not succeed in the sight of Allah.

7. Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (9:118-119)

وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوا۟ أَنَّ لَا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيْهِ
"And to the three who were left behind, when the earth was closed upon them in spite of its vastness, and their souls were distressed, and they thought that there is no refuge from Allah except with Him." (9:118)

• Repentance is always open, and those who sincerely repent for their mistakes, including the three companions who were left behind during the Battle of Tabuk, are accepted by Allah. His mercy is vast, and forgiveness is available to all who turn to Him.
