Surah Az Zalzalah in English

Surah Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake) is the 99th chapter of the Qur'an, consisting of 8 verses. It was revealed in Madinah and discusses the events of the Day of Judgment, specifically describing the catastrophic earthquake that will shake the Earth when it is transformed and people are made to face the results of their deeds.

Here is the English translation of Surah Az-Zalzalah, along with brief explanations for each verse:

1.

When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake

Explanation:
This verse refers to the massive earthquake that will occur at the end of the world, on the Day of Judgment. This event will be so powerful and transformative that the Earth itself will shake and be altered, symbolizing the beginning of the end of the world and the commencement of the final reckoning.

2.

And the earth discharges its burdens

Explanation:
The Earth will release everything it has within it, such as all the actions of mankind, the deeds of every individual, and even the knowledge of what has transpired upon it. This could symbolize the unveiling of the records of people's deeds and the truth that will emerge on that day.

3.

And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?"

Explanation:
On the Day of Judgment, when the Earth shakes and reveals its contents, people will be confused and frightened. They will wonder what is happening, unable to comprehend the enormity of the events taking place. The disbelievers may question the reason behind this drastic transformation.

4.

That Day, it will report its news

Explanation:
On that day, the Earth will narrate all that has happened on it, revealing the actions of humanity. The Earth will bear witness to everything that took place upon it, as each individual’s deeds will be known and brought forward for judgment.

5.

Because your Lord has commanded it.

Explanation:
This verse clarifies that the Earth will perform this act of revealing its secrets because it is a command from Allah. Everything in the universe operates by Allah’s will, and the Earth will obey His command on the Day of Judgment.

6.

That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.

Explanation:
On the Day of Judgment, people will be divided into different groups based on their deeds. The righteous will be rewarded, and the wrongdoers will face punishment. Everyone will be shown the result of their actions, and their fate will be determined according to their deeds.

7.

So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,

Explanation:
This verse affirms that even the smallest deed will not go unnoticed. Those who do even the smallest act of good will see it and be rewarded for it. This emphasizes Allah’s justice and the importance of every action, no matter how seemingly insignificant.

8.

And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

Explanation:
Similarly, anyone who commits even the smallest evil act will be shown its consequence. This serves as a warning that every action, whether good or bad, is recorded and will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.

Summary of Surah Az-Zalzalah:

Surah Az-Zalzalah vividly describes the events of the Day of Judgment, particularly the Earth’s violent shaking, which will occur when it is transformed to bear witness to the deeds of humanity. It emphasizes that every individual will be judged based on their actions, with even the smallest deeds—good or bad—being accounted for.

The Surah serves as a reminder of the ultimate justice of Allah, where no good deed will go unrewarded and no evil deed will go unpunished. It highlights the certainty of the Day of Judgment, encouraging believers to live righteous lives, mindful of their actions, as every small act will be seen and accounted for by Allah.
