Translation and Explanation of Surah Yunus

1. Introduction: The Nature of the Qur'an (10:1-2)

أَلم ۚ تِلْكَ آيَٰتُ الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِيمِ
"Alif, Lam, Meem. These are the verses of the Wise Book." (10:1)

• The Surah opens with disjointed letters (Alif, Lam, Meem), which are found in several Surahs of the Qur'an and serve as a mystical aspect of the book, signifying its divine origin. The Qur'an is called a wise book, highlighting its deep wisdom and guidance for humankind.

أَتَعَجَّبُونَ أَنْ جَآءَكُمْ ذِكْرٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍۢ مِّّنْكُمْ لِيُنذِرَكُمْ وَلِتَتَّقُوا۟ ۚ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
"Do you wonder that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you, to warn you that you may become righteous so that you may be shown mercy?" (10:2)

• This verse addresses the people’s disbelief in the Prophet Yunus (PBUH). They are surprised that a human being is sent as a prophet to warn them. The reminder from Allah is meant to guide them to righteousness and earn Allah’s mercy.

2. The Call to Monotheism and Allah's Mercy (10:3-5)

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ السَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍۢ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ ۖ مَا مِن شَفِيعٍۢ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ إِذْنِهِۦۖ
"Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself above the Throne. He manages the affair. No intercessor [can plead] with Him except by His permission." (10:3)

• This verse reminds people of Allah’s greatness: He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and governs the affairs of the universe. No one can intercede with Allah except with His permission, showing His absolute power and authority.

3. The Response of the People to the Prophets (10:6-10)

وَلَكُمْ فِى الْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّۭ وَمَتَاعٌۭ إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ ۖ
"And for you in the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time." (10:6)

• Allah mentions the blessings of the earth, which provide a place of settlement and enjoyment for humankind. However, this enjoyment is temporary, and ultimately, everyone will return to Allah.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَيَجْحَدُونَ بِالْحَقِّ
"Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are ignorant of the truth and deny the reality." (10:7)

• This verse points out that those who reject the Hereafter and the truth of Allah’s message are denying reality. They are caught up in false beliefs, which lead them away from the right path.

4. The Story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) (10:98-104)

The story of Prophet Yunus (PBUH) is a central theme in this Surah. Prophet Yunus was sent to the people of Nineveh, but they rejected him. After they rejected his message, he became disheartened and left his people, only to be swallowed by a giant fish (whale).

فَلَوْلَا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌۭ ءَامَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَآ إِيمَٰنُهَا إِلَّا قَوْمَ يُنُوسَ لَمَّا ءَامَنُوا۟
"Then why was there no town that believed and its belief benefited it, except the people of Yunus?" (10:98)

• The people of Yunus believed after they were confronted with punishment, and they were saved. The Surah highlights how repentance and faith after realizing one's mistakes can bring Allah's mercy.

فَٱمْتَصَّهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌۭ
"And the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy." (10:98)

• After Yunus left his people in anger, he was swallowed by a whale. The verse emphasizes that he was blameworthy for leaving his mission before Allah’s command.

فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
"And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, he would have remained inside the belly of the fish until the Day they are resurrected." (10:99)

• However, Yunus was from the believers, and when he turned to Allah in repentance, Allah responded to him by commanding the fish to release him. This shows the mercy and grace of Allah towards His servants.

5. Allah's Mercy and Guidance for the Believers (10:108-109)

قُلْ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّىٓ قَدْ جَآءَكُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ فَمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ فَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِى لِنَفْسِهِۦ وَمَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا يَضِلُّ عَلَيْهَا ۚ
"Say, 'O mankind, indeed the truth has come to you from your Lord. So whoever is guided is only guided for himself, and whoever goes astray does so to his own loss.'" (10:108)

• This verse calls the people to embrace the truth and guidance that Allah has sent through His Prophet. The responsibility for accepting or rejecting the guidance lies with each individual.

وَٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ
"And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord." (10:109)

• The Surah encourages people to follow Allah’s guidance, as it leads to righteousness and salvation.

6. The Evidence of Allah's Existence and Power (10:31-34)

قُلْ مَن يَرْزُقُكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَٰءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ أَمَّن يَمْلِكُ ٱلْسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ ۖ وَمَن يُخْرِجُ ٱلْحَىَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَيْتِ وَيُخْرِجُ ٱلْمَيْتَ مِنَ ٱلْحَىِّ ۚ
"Say, 'Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight? And who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living?'" (10:31)
